Welcome to this closing session of the first year of the Centro SOL Youth Summer program. The goal of the program is to expose bilingual high school students to the medical field by offering meaningful opportunities to work with JHU School of Medicine faculty in clinical settings that serve Latino patients with limited-English proficiency.

This year we had 6 students for 5 weeks rotating and shadowing professionals at Johns Hopkins Bayview and East Baltimore Campus.

This has been a learning experience, first summer, and still we went far from our goal, meeting great students and future leaders, connecting faculty and staff with the program, and strengthening the bridge between the patients and Hopkins.

First of all, we would like to thank the Straus Foundation and the Greenberg Foundation that want, as much as we do, these students to succeed.

We would like to thank Johns Hopkins Bayview and the Language Access Services for their support. Particularly: physicians, registrars, medical assistants, nurses, interpreters, medical and grad. students and other staff from:

  • Pediatrics and the Children’s Medical Practice
  • OB/GYN
  • Health Leads
  • Social Work
  • Geriatrics
  • Neurosurgery
  • MERIT
  • RISE UP
  • And all the patients who kindly received our students as part of the institution.

Thanks also to the great support provided by the Student Affairs and the Vice-Dean office whose unconditional and efficient advice drove us through the right way.

In addition, we want to extend the gratitude to the Baltimore City Office of Immigrant and Multicultural Affairs and Public Schools System for their advice and bridge with the community. Also to the Baltimore City Health Departament, particularly the Latino Outreach group for giving the students great advice of community.

Thank you all for opening the doors to a future of diversity and inclusion, where as stated in the Johns Hopkins Patient Bill of Rights, everyone has the right to access to a communication that all can understand.

And last, but not least, thanks to our students who learned but also taught us life skills. They are all mature and experienced, with a long way behind, and still full of energy and dreams for the future. As Dr. Q advise them: “never give up on what you truly believe in your head and heart. We are all fighters.”

To all, thank you.

Stay tuned for photos!

  • OB/GYN
  • Health Leads
  • Trabajo Social
  • Geriatría
  • Neurocirugía
  • MERIT
  • RISE UP

Nosotros somos luchadores”

A todos, gracias.

Atentos a fotos!
